Stump Grinding in Stalham & the Norfolk Broads
Left with an old stump after a tree came down? We grind stumps and their roots down below ground level, so you're left with ground you can replant or turf over — and we can grind deeper if you're paving or building. Fast, tidy, and priced as a standalone job or alongside tree removal.
How stump grinding works
A stump grinder is a machine with a rotating cutting wheel that chips the stump away in small passes, cutting a few inches below ground level each time. It breaks up the surface roots as well as the main stump, so there's nothing left sticking up — and regrowth from the old trunk is very unlikely.
The result is a bed of woodchips and soil in the hole. We can rake that out and level it, or leave the grindings to settle — whichever suits how you're using the ground. On the right driveway, the grinder is usually small enough to get through a standard gate, so most garden stumps are straightforward.

Access and how deep we go
Most garden stumps are ground to around 150–200mm below ground level — deep enough to turf or plant over without hitting the old wood. If you're laying a driveway or building over the spot, we can grind deeper or remove more of the root plate; just tell us what's planned.
We'll check access when we quote. The grinder fits through a standard garden gate, but if a stump is boxed in with no access, we'll say so upfront and suggest the alternatives — including grinding in stages or winching out.
Stump grinding questions
How much does stump grinding cost?
It depends on the stump's diameter, depth, species and access. Send us a photo and we'll give you a price — it's usually much less than people expect.
Will the tree grow back?
Grinding below ground removes the stump and surface roots, so regrowth is very unlikely. On a few species that sucker easily we may treat the area as a precaution.
Do you remove the grindings?
Yes, if you want them gone. We can rake the woodchip and soil out and take it away, leave it to settle, or leave the chips with you for mulch.
Can you grind a stump without removing the tree first?
Sometimes, if the stump is from an already-felled tree. If the tree is still standing, it needs removing first — we can quote for both together.
