Tree Pruning & Crown Reduction in Stalham
Pruning keeps a tree healthy, safe and the right size for its space. LJ Tree Services carries out crown reduction, crown thinning, crown lifting and deadwood removal across Stalham and the Norfolk Broads — with proper pruning cuts that protect the tree, not butcher it.

What each pruning job involves
Crown reduction — reduces the height and spread of the crown, usually by a set percentage, by pruning back to strong lateral branches. It controls size while keeping the tree's shape and structure.
Crown thinning — removes a proportion of the inner branches evenly through the canopy. It reduces density so more light and air pass through, which cuts die-back, and leaves the overall shape unchanged.
Crown lifting — removes the lowest branches to raise the height of the crown's base. This gives clearance over paths, driveways and buildings, and lets more light reach the ground.
Deadwood removal — takes out dead, dying, broken or rubbing branches so they can't drop unexpectedly. It's about safety rather than appearance.

Pruning done properly
Trees don't respond well to being cut back hard or at the wrong time of year. We prune to British Standard 3998 wherever possible — correct cuts in the right places, no stubs, no flush cuts and no tearing — so the tree seals the wound and regrows cleanly. If you're not sure which pruning is right for your tree, we'll tell you honestly on the site visit, and we'll advise when it's best left alone.

When pruning is worth doing
Book a prune if a tree is blocking light, growing into a building or power line, dropping dead wood on a path, or simply getting too big for where it stands.
It's also the right call before a tree becomes a risk. A reduction now is usually cheaper and safer than an emergency removal later. We'll check for TPOs or conservation-area status and handle any council permission on your behalf — see our TPO & conservation area guide.
Pruning questions
What's the best time of year to prune?
Most trees are best pruned in late winter or dormant season, though deadwooding can be done any time. There are exceptions — we'll advise for your specific species.
Will pruning damage my tree?
Done correctly, no. We prune to BS3998 with clean, correct cuts and avoid removing too much at once, which is what causes lasting damage.
Crown reduction or pollarding — which do I need?
They're different. Reduction keeps the tree's natural shape and is suited to most garden trees; pollarding is a heavier, repetitive cut only suitable for certain species. We'll recommend the right one.
Do you take the prunings away?
Yes. Branches are chipped and removed, and the site is left tidy. We can leave you the woodchip or logs if you'd like them.
Need a tree pruned?
We'll assess the tree, explain your options and give you a clear quote.
